TODAY'S HOMILY IN BRIEF.                           

At a time when true Christian life entails grave risks and the Christian faith seemingly offers the world nothing but hope alone we're strongly tempted to become PASSIVE in our Christian witnessing while focusing all our attention on heaven. The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord invites us to a very ACTIVE Christian witnessing today even as we keep our hearts focused on heaven to avoid becoming earth-bound.

NEW MONTH'S BLESSINGS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST

In the Hebrew scriptures (the Old Testament) the number 8 sometimes is used symbolically to represent that which is a surplus or a complete completion of a thing. With the number 7 being the number of completion, perfection or fullness, 8 can be best understood as still part of the whole just greater than the whole. For example, the basket is full of grains, and then there is a surplus...
